If you have ever experienced pain or stiffness in your jaw, you may have a condition called TMJ disorder. TMJ stands for temporomandibular joint, the hinge-like joint connecting your lower jaw to your skull. This joint allows you to open and close your mouth, chew, speak, and swallow.
TMJ disorders are a group of problems that affect the function and comfort of this joint and its surrounding muscles. According to some estimates, up to 3 out of 4 adults suffer from TMJ disorders at some point. The symptoms can range from mild to severe and interfere with daily activities.
